Sonata for Trumpet (opt. dblg. Flugelhorn) and Piano (PDF SCORE AND PART)
( Please note this is for a PDF SCORE AND PART) This work was commissioned by and written for the American virtuoso trumpeter, Mary Bowden. The work is + minutes and in three roughly equal movements. The first movement oscillates between two main thematic styles: a lyrical, but strong melody and a more fractured repeated note writing. The second movement is a slow one with stacked harmonies and a smoky, lounge-y harmonic feeling over a long sustained land simple line in the flugelhorn, which is written in for this movement. However, the work can be performed by trumpet, if the player has no access to a flugelhorn. The third movement is a romp alternating between impish and sprightly runs , staccato passages, and rip-roaring high passages, but never losing sight of the fact that the trumpet can be a beautiful lyrical instrument, even in virtuosic work.
